A Night at the Ballet – Step Two

Act normal. She had to act normal.

Breathe, Spyder.

It’s not easy, you know?

I’m fundamentally aware of that.

Stef looked down at the ticket in her hand, to the line ahead, then to the recruit. ‘So, uh, why did you volunteer for this?’

“Night off to see a ballet that’s been gathering praise by the buckets? Hells to the yes. Best case scenario, a night out on the town on the Agency dime, Dinner and a show, maybe ice cream after. Medium case scenario, a bit of investigative work, and a quick chat with a few people on the meaning of discretion, worst case scenario, fleeing targets!” She said the last two words with such relish and delight that it was clear to anyone listening that the “worst case scenario” was best, in her mind.

“Uh, that is… if everything goes smoothly, catching a bite to eat IS an option, right Agent Mimosa? There’s a new gelato place about a block from the theater, I’ve heard ungodly delightful things about their rum raisin. “

The way Jessica said “worst case” made Stef think of Mags. Glee. The worst case would involve running, and she didn’t care if she was a powerful and mighty agent, running still made her want to puke. Sometimes, you just couldn’t beat psychology, even with nanotechnology.

‘Yep,’ she agreed. ‘Best case, reports are being exaggerated, and it’s just clever showmanship, which is a possibility, even if the performers are fae. Medium case is what I think is most likely. Worse case, um, can you run in those heels?’

Jessica snorted. “Run, no. Walk a tightrope, yes. But theres a sub shoe that comes off and provides protection with a twist. And the heels have some fun toys in them. This is my Bond outfit, for when I need to sneak my way into someplace to get to the target before…”

Jessica made a pistol with her hand, then dropped her thumb like a hammer, making a popping noise with her mouth.

” Seriously, Agent Jones gives me the most adorable gadgets to test. Something about, if they survive me, they should be indestructible for Field? “

They moved forward a step in line, and Jessica simultaneously fiddled on her phone while scanning the crowd for dangerous postures and hidden weapons. “Besides, Agent. If things go really bad, we won’t be the ones doing the running.”

Mia: I didnt volunteer, well not exactly. Director Ryan wanted me to do more feild testing of my abilities in non combat situations and suggested this one as a starting block. You know in that way that isntcrealky a suggestion. I think he’s been…concerned by the amount of time I’ve been spending in combat recently and wanted to… make sure i keep my feild skills upto date.
